Why Choose a Apple Mac

Thinking about upgrading to Vista? Even more reasons to get a Mac.

1. No upgrade nightmares.

Before you can even think about Vista, you’ll likely need a new PC.

Or upgrades for memory, hard disk and graphics card.

Why go through all that hassle, when you can just get a Mac? More

2. You can even run Windows.

Mac gives you choices. With the latest software options, an Intel-powered Mac can easily run Vista or Windows XP applications. Not that you’ll want to. More

3. It’s simpler.

No need to choose from the many (and expensive) flavours of Vista. Every Mac runs the same Mac OS X — with the full set of industry-leading features. More

4. You don’t have to buy new stuff.

Your existing printer, camera, keyboard and mouse will work with a Mac. PCs and Macs can usually share peripherals if they connect via USB, FireWire or Bluetooth, three industry standards built into every Mac. More

5. Know iTunes?

You’ll feel right at home. You’ll recognise features like the library collection, playlist arrangement and instant search in many Mac applications. So you’re something of a Mac expert already. More

6. Macs run Microsoft Office.

Microsoft Office for Mac OS X gives you Word, PowerPoint and Excel, all with familiar features and shortcut commands. For collaborative work, Office for Mac connects to Microsoft Exchange servers. More

7. You can take it with you.

Most popular applications for Mac and PC use the same file formats, making it simple to exchange documents with friends and coworkers or move existing files from a PC to a Mac. More

Internet bankers beware!

Crime syndicates target SA (Independant Newspapers: http://www.tios.co.za/?fArticleId=4066399) October 06, 2007 Edition 1Babington MaravanyikA

SOUTH African e-mail users are coming under unprecedented attack by organised crime syndicates masquerading as banks, in an attempt to trick them into divulging their confidential banking details.

And the bad news is that there isn’t much the police can do to arrest the fraudsters since they open their websites, using fake identities, often through overseas-based internet service providers.

The con artists have developed new technology that has enabled their “phishing” e-mails to evade sophisticated anti-spam software, said an executive of a leading anti-virus software company.

The crime syndicates, which are mostly based overseas, are sending millions of phishing e-mails to South Africa, according to Justin Stanford, the chief executive officer of Eset Southern Africa, which markets the NOD32 antivirus system. The number of phishing e-mails aimed at South Africans and evading all sophisticated filters had increased dramatically over the past few weeks.

The mails, purporting to be from most of South Africa’s major banks, generally had very good copies of the banks’ actual websites and included genuine phone, fax and e-mail details.

While some of the phishing syndicates were based in South Africa, most operated from countries like the Philippines, Russia, Indonesia and the US, and are posing a major challenge to anti-virus and anti-spam software developers.

“…they (the syndicates) always try hard to come up with new technology to beat existing anti-virus software,” Stanford said.

He said phishing messages did not contain malicious software (viruses) in themselves, as their sole purpose was to defraud by illicitly obtaining PIN numbers and passwords.

A little known mistake most web designers make …

Do yourself a favour.  In your internet browser, we will use Internet Explorer for now, click on Tools, then click on Internet Options.  Now click on the Colors button.  Untick the option that says “User Windows Colors”.  Select the most outstanding colour you can think of for the background, luminous green for instance.

Click ok and close those windows.  Now browse around the internet and have a look at how many websites, even some large corporate companies, sport a luminous green background?

Many, many designers have made this mistake by assuming that everyone uses the default white background on their internet browsers.  It seems to be one of those little things that have predominently gone unnoticed.

Go and have a look at www.ebay.com for an example of what I mean.

It’s quite simple to get around this though, simply set the background colour in the <body> tag or in the CSS stylesheet.

List your website on Google, MSN and Yahoo!.

Today the web is all about being known! If you don’t appear in Google, MSN or Yahoo when prospective clients are searching for something relevant to your company you won’t be known to them. So how does one have your website listed in Google, MSN and Yahoo?

Part 1: The basics:

  1. Make sure your website has META tags – give your web designer a call to make sure that these are setup on each page on the website. META tags describe your website so that the search engine understands what the website is all about – VERY important!! To check if your website has META tags, visit your website. In Internet Explorer click View and Source. If you see <meta name=”description” and <meta name=”keywords” in the first few lines the page does have META tags.
  2. Tell Google, MSN, & Yahoo that your website exists!
    • Google: http://www.google.co.za/intl/en/submit_content.html
    • Yahoo: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit
    • MSN: http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx
  3. List your website on Ananzi, Aardvark and DMOZ – the are website directories – the more you are listed in the various directories on the net the better.
