Pastel Accounting v7 upgrade offer
Oct 29th
End of Life for Pastel Accounting 7:
Due to the ever-changing nature of the software and hardware environment, it is typical for providers not to support historical software versions. Resources do not allow for outdated packages to be supported, and Softline will therefore discontinue support for Pastel Accounting Version 7 with effect from 31 December 2008.
If you’re still using Pastel Accounting Version 7, now is the time to upgrade. Pastel Accounting 2009 is about to be released, and there’s never been a better time to be on the latest version of Pastel.
Why it is critical for you to upgrade your software?
Older versions of software are no longer tested on current operating systems, which can lead to complications with your software, and at worst, the loss of critical business information.

We take great pleasure in introducing you to Pastel Accounting 2009 which offers greater security, flexibility, efficiency and control.
What is particularly gratifying to us as developers is that this is very much your new software version because, while we monitor trends, one of our most important sources of ideas for new product development is customer and channel feedback.
Pastel Bank Manager – NEW (Add-on module for Xpress and Partner)
One of the most exciting new modules in the 2009 software version, Pastel Bank Manager lets you download your bank statement into Pastel, and the system will then automatically update your books. It works with all major SA banks and maps the correct ledger accounts in your customers’ books, automating a necessary task.
User Groups and User Access – NEW (Feature in Xpress and Partner)
Your customers can now improve security and prevent fraud in their businesses by restricting access to sensitive information, by user. Users can be categorised into groups, with certain access capabilities, but with the option to further personalise a particular user’s rights.
System Audit Trail – NEW (Feature in Xpress and Partner)
The System Audit Trail tightens the security of the overall system by tracking the date, time and user who makes any system set-up changes, such as allowing inventory quantities to fall below zero and renumbering customer or inventory codes. This feature promotes accountability, minimises mistakes and deters users from fraudulent behaviour.
Transaction Audit Trail – NEW (Feature in Xpress and Partner)
The Transaction Audit Trail provides a chronological sequence of transactions to help with data interrogation. This includes those “behind the scenes” postings and transactions and will simplify investigations into anomalies or queries.
Pastel Cash Manager – NEW (Add-on module for Partner)
Pastel Cash Manager is a debtor’s management system that is suitable for any business, in any industry, which seeks to optimise the debtor’s collection process. It generates automatic chase lists for follow up and eliminates the need for scribbled notes on the age analysis. It also provides instant reconciliations of invoices outstanding per ageing category per debtor; calculates actual days outstanding per invoice; monitors payment history and tracks all calls made to debtors and promises made.
Gross Profit Reports: Average Cost or Last Cost – ENHANCED (Feature in Xpress and Partner)
All reports displaying Gross Profit, such as Sales by Item or Sales by Customer, now have the option to use either average cost or last cost. This is very useful if your customers’ costs vary considerably.
Point of Sale – ENHANCED (Add-on module for Xpress and Partner)
Security in this module has been improved. For example, rights can be assigned to specific fields, determining which fields a user can change and, as a double protection, allow a particular user the right to change a field, but only if a supervisor password is entered.
Receipting – ENHANCED (Add-on module for Partner)
Receipt money against multiple customers, suppliers, or GL accounts, saving considerable time. For example, a school can now include school fees, books and school trips, all on a single receipt.
Online back-up integration – NEW (Feature in Xpress and Partner)
Tighter integration into Pastel IronTree’s online back-up solution means your customers can register for and launch online back-ups from within the new version of Pastel Accounting 2009.
Looks do count – NEW
Pastel Accounting 2009 has had a mini face-lift. We’ve added some fresh new graphics and icons, which will enhance the user experience and make navigation even simpler than before.
So, with all of these new features and enhanced functionality, there’s never been a better time to upgrade to the latest version of Pastel Accounting software. Once again, we’re taking you and your customers beyond accounting.
Avoid data loss & expensive data recovery
Jan 14th
More and more clients are calling on us to assist them with data recovery due to hard drive failure, server crashes, USB memory sticks that get drowned etc. The recovery of their data is expensive due to the lost time both in waiting for the data and having the data recovered let alone the fact that at times full data recovery is not possible – very scary scenario.
Things we know:
- eletronic hardware will fail – it’s just the when we are not sure of.
- Notebooks/PCs/Servers can be stolen / lost or have accidental damage.
- The data or information on these devices are more valuable than equipment it’s stored on
Things we can do:
- have a data recovery plan in place even if it’s a 1 page document stating the obvious – (eg Backup, backup, backup!)
- Backup, backup, backup!
- Have an off-site copy of your data – stored at home, away from the office or using services such as our online back service.
- Use optical media for archiving purposes – once you’ve done your year end and need to store the data else where, back up to your hard drive, make a couple copies to DVD/CD and keep the data in fire proof safe.
- If data recovery is required do a little research into the company that will recovery the data; ask questions about turn arround times, how will they get the data back to you, what is that companies recovery rate in % etc. We use Intratec Data Recovery due to their high rate of recoveries and good service.
Internet bankers beware!

Crime syndicates target SA (Independant Newspapers: http://www.tios.co.za/?fArticleId=4066399) October 06, 2007 Edition 1Babington MaravanyikA
SOUTH African e-mail users are coming under unprecedented attack by organised crime syndicates masquerading as banks, in an attempt to trick them into divulging their confidential banking details.
And the bad news is that there isn’t much the police can do to arrest the fraudsters since they open their websites, using fake identities, often through overseas-based internet service providers.
The con artists have developed new technology that has enabled their “phishing” e-mails to evade sophisticated anti-spam software, said an executive of a leading anti-virus software company.
The crime syndicates, which are mostly based overseas, are sending millions of phishing e-mails to South Africa, according to Justin Stanford, the chief executive officer of Eset Southern Africa, which markets the NOD32 antivirus system. The number of phishing e-mails aimed at South Africans and evading all sophisticated filters had increased dramatically over the past few weeks.
The mails, purporting to be from most of South Africa’s major banks, generally had very good copies of the banks’ actual websites and included genuine phone, fax and e-mail details.
While some of the phishing syndicates were based in South Africa, most operated from countries like the Philippines, Russia, Indonesia and the US, and are posing a major challenge to anti-virus and anti-spam software developers.
“…they (the syndicates) always try hard to come up with new technology to beat existing anti-virus software,” Stanford said.
He said phishing messages did not contain malicious software (viruses) in themselves, as their sole purpose was to defraud by illicitly obtaining PIN numbers and passwords.
